Machining
Specialising
in one-offs and limited runs as we do, we tend to
run dumb machines and smart people – in distinct
contrast to production manufacturing environments.
This leads to the slight oddity that our machines
are almost all older than the people operating
them! Leaving aside the wheelwright’s cone –
about 300 kg of wrought iron dating from around
1840 – our capstan lathe dates from 1911, the
large pillar drill from the 1920’s and the
centre lathe the 1950’s. The emphasis here is on
skill and craftsmanship, as will always be the
case.
Polishing
and Finishing
It
is possible to leave bronze in its as cast state,
but generally people will want to refine the
surface somewhat. At its simplest this takes the
form of progressive smoothing of the surface from
a linished finish through a brushed satin finish
to a high polish. Once polished, the surface can
be modified by patination or plating as required,
though some would argue that natural oxidation
produces the most pleasing finish.
Rigging
We can
design and supply rigging and associated fittings
such as blocks and wire. Most of these feature in
the "standard equipment" section, but
please get in touch if there is anything we can
help with.
