The
original cardboard mock-up by the architect became after
many iterations.......
....a
cad drawing which was used to visualise and develop the
design, and then subsequently to create the information
for making the piece in our workshop.
An
area which needed development was the design of the
candleholders. One aspect was to design them such that
the candles consumed themselves as completely as possible,
to reduce the amount of cleaning required. Beyond this,
the candles had to be held such that they did not
overheat the surface, and so that they could be safely
accessed. In the top picture you can see a number of
arrangements and spacings.
Another aspect for development was the style of the
crosses and uprights. Initially the idea had been to use
dichroic glass, lit by fibre optics, but a test showed
this arrangement to be somewhat garish. The adopted
solution was for cast bronze crosses as in the lower
