Extending original handrails in an Oxford College

(Click on the images to see a bigger version)
To start with, a detailed survey, and the production of shop drawings for both the runs of the handrail, and for the patternwork needed.

We could also then work out where the various supports could go to line up with the strong points in the panelling

The patterns needed to be cored to produce the hollow shape of the rail, to be cast in bronze.

In the pictures here the black extensions mark the core prints, and the plain red patterns form the mould for the cores themselves

Being a hollow section, the bronze rails needed to be supported by steel sections - this copied the original scheme - so we used the steelwork to check we had the run of the rails and the position of the supports right.  int lhs top2.jpg (1197422 bytes)

Inevitably a few adjustments, but then the rails could be fitted.

The new handrails fitted so well into the existing decor that they were barely noticeable; perhaps the best compliment of all?
